Vishnu Sahasranama lyrics and translation

Introduction

The Sri Vishnu Sahasranama Stotram—the sacred hymn of the Thousand Divine Names of Lord Vishnu—stands as one of the most revered and spiritually potent jewels of Sanatana Dharma. Bestowed upon the world in the Anushasana Parvaof the Mahabharata, this divine stotra was delivered by the grandsire Bhishma while resting upon the bed of arrows (shara-shayya) on the sacred field of Kurukshetra. In the presence of Lord Sri Krishna, Maharaja Yudhishthira, burdened by the anguish of the great war and seeking the ultimate spiritual refuge for humanity, posed six profound questions regarding the supreme goal of human life, the highest deity, and the path to liberation from the repeated cycle of birth and death. In answer, Bhishma declared that the perpetual, loving contemplation, worship, and glorification of the Thousand Names of Sri Hari constitutes the paramount dharma (sarva-dharmanam dharmo'dhikatamo matah).

Within this comprehensive study, devotees and seekers will find the complete preliminary invocations (Prarthana), the historical dialogue between Yudhishthira and Bhishma (Purvabhaga), the traditional meditative preparations (Purvanyasaand Dhyanam), the complete 108 principal stotra verses celebrating the thousand transcendental names, and the concluding benedictory verses (Phalashruti). This exposition invites the reader to immerse their heart in the purifying, all-auspicious grace of the Supreme Lord Narayana.

Verses:

śuklāmbaradharaṃ viṣṇuṃ śaśivarṇaṃ caturbhujam, prasannavadanaṃ dhyāyet sarvavighnōpaśāntaye. (1)

Fix your loving gaze upon our dazzling Lord Hari! Radiant like the cooling full moon and adorned in spotless white garments, His four graceful arms embrace the cosmos, and His ever-smiling, serene face melts away all obstacles on our path of devotional surrender.

yasya dviradavaktrādyāḥ pāriṣadyāḥ paraḥ śatam, vighnaṃ nighnanti satataṃ viṣvakṣenaṃ tam āśraye. (2)

With a heart of pure surrender, I take shelter in Viṣvaksena, Hari's mighty commander. Alongside his fearless elephant-faced chief and hundreds of celestial attendants, he unceasingly clears away every obstacle blocking our awakening in Hari Consciousness.

vyāsaṃ vasiṣṭhanaptāraṃ śakteḥ pautramakalmaṣam, parāśarātmajaṃ vande śukatātaṃ taponidhim. (3)

I bow with deep reverence to Sage Vyāsa—the great-grandson of Vasiṣṭha, grandson of Śakti, spotless son of Parāśara, and father of Śukadeva. He is an inexhaustible ocean of spiritual tapasya who opened the floodgates of Hari's pastimes and holy names for the redemption of all humanity.

vyāsāya viṣṇurūpāya vyāsarūpāya viṣṇave, namo vai brahmanidhaye vāsiṣṭhāya namo namaḥ. (4)

Again and again I prostrate before Vyāsa, who is non-different from Lord Hari Himself, and before Hari who speaks to us in the form of Vyāsa. Repeated prostrations unto this venerable treasure of Brahman who guides every searching soul straight to the lotus feet of Hari.

avikārāya śuddhāya nityāya paramātmane, sadaikarūparūpāya viṣṇave sarvajiṣṇave. (5)

I surrender completely to Lord Hari—the immutable, immaculate, and eternal Supreme Self (Paramātmā). While the material cosmos constantly shifts, my sweet Hari remains ever steadfast in His loving divine form, eternally triumphant over every illusion of māyā.

yasya smaraṇamātreṇa janmasaṃsārabandhanāt, vimucyate namas tasmai viṣṇave prabhaviṣṇave. (6)

All glories to the all-powerful Lord Hari! The very moment a wandering soul simply remembers His sweet name with love, the heavy chains of birth, death, and worldly entrapment snap instantly, ushering the heart into eternal spiritual freedom.

śrī vaiśampāyana uvāca – śrutvā dharmānaśeṣeṇa pāvanāni ca sarvaśaḥ, yudhiṣṭhiraḥ śāntanavaṃ punarevābhyabhāṣata. (7)

Śrī Vaiśampāyana said: Having absorbed all purifying principles of Dharma, the righteous King Yudhiṣṭhira, thirsting for the ultimate nectar of spiritual realization, approached Grandfather Bhīṣma with earnest devotional inquiry.

śrī yudhiṣṭhira uvāca – kim ekaṃ daivataṃ loke kiṃ vāpy ekaṃ parāyaṇam, stuvantaḥ kaṃ kam arcantaḥ prāpnuyur mānavāḥ śubham. (8)

Yudhiṣṭhira asked: Who is the singular supreme Divinity across all realms? What is the sole ultimate refuge for our longing hearts? By extolling and adoring whom do human beings attain the highest auspiciousness and eternal good?

ko dharmaḥ sarvadharmāṇāṃ bhavataḥ paramo mataḥ, kiṃ japan mucyate jantur janmasaṃsārabandhanāt. (9)

Among all spiritual duties, which Dharma do you crown as supreme? By constantly chanting what sacred utterance does an embodied soul break free forever from the painful bondage of birth, death, and transmigration?

śrī bhīṣma uvāca – jagatprabhuṃ devadevamanantaṃ puruṣottamam, stuvan nāmasahasreṇa puruṣaḥ satatotthitaḥ. (10)

Grandfather Bhīṣma replied: By constantly glorifying the Sovereign of the universe, the God of all gods, the boundless Puruṣottama, through His thousand holy names, a soul is permanently lifted out of material darkness and established in the highest state of Hari Consciousness.

tam eva cārcayan nityaṃ bhaktyā puruṣam avyayam, dhyāyan stuvan namasyaṃś ca yajamānas tam eva ca. (11)

Pour your heart solely into loving worship of this imperishable Supreme Person! By meditating upon Him, extolling Him, bowing before Him in humility, and dedicating every action as a sacrifice of love unto Him alone, the seeker is perpetually uplifted into divine joy.

anādinidhanaṃ viṣṇuṃ sarvalokamaheśvaram, lokādhyakṣaṃ stuvan nityaṃ sarvaduḥkhātigo bhavet. (12)

By ceaselessly praising Lord Hari—who is without beginning or end, the loving Ruler of all cosmic realms, and the ever-watchful guardian of the worlds—one completely transcends all anxieties, lamentation, and material sorrow.

brahmaṇyaṃ sarvadharmajñaṃ lokānāṃ kīrtivardhanam, lokanāthaṃ mahadbhūtaṃ sarvabhūtabhavodbhavam. (13)

He is the true friend of all spiritual seekers, the profound knower of all Dharma, the enhancer of renown throughout the worlds, the universal Protector, the Supreme Being, and the primordial source from whom every living soul manifests.

eṣa me sarvadharmāṇāṃ dharmo dhikatamo mataḥ, yad bhaktyā puṇḍarīkākṣaṃ stavair arcen naraḥ sadā. (14)

In my firm conviction, this is the crest-jewel of all Dharmas: that an individual should constantly offer devoted love (bhakti) and heartfelt hymns of praise unto our lotus-eyed Lord Hari at every step of life.

paramaṃ yo mahattejāḥ paramaṃ yo mahattapaḥ, paramaṃ yo mahadbrahma paramaṃ yaḥ parāyaṇam. (15)

He is the supreme radiant light illuminating all worlds; He is the highest spiritual power and austerity; He is the transcendent, boundless Brahman; and He is the ultimate, sweet home toward which every living being is journeying.

pavitrāṇāṃ pavitraṃ yo maṅgalānāṃ ca maṅgalam, daivataṃ daivatānāṃ ca bhūtānāṃ yo 'vyayaḥ pitā. (16)

He is the purest of all sanctifying principles, the supreme wellspring of all blessings, the Lord presiding over all celestial deities, and the imperishable, ever-loving Father of every living entity.

yataḥ sarvāणि bhūtāni bhavanty ādiyugāgame, yasmiṃś ca pralayaṃ yānti punar eva yugakṣaye. (17)

At the cosmic dawn, all living souls emerge from His divine will like loving sparks from a fire, and at the close of the universal age, they rest safely back within His bosom until the dawn of the next cosmic day.

tasya lokapradhānasya jagannāthasya bhūpate, viṣṇor nāmasahasraṃ me śṛṇu pāpabhayāpaham. (18)

Therefore, O King, listen with an open, receptive heart to these thousand transcendental names of the Master of the universe, Lord Hari—names that instantly wash away all fear, karmic guilt, and suffering.

yāni nāmāni gauṇāni vikhyātāni mahātmanaḥ, ṛṣibhiḥ parigītāni tāni vakṣyāmi bhūtaye. (19)

I shall now declare for the spiritual awakening and welfare of all humanity those celebrated names of the Great Soul, which sing of His boundless divine qualities and have been lovingly revealed by illumined Ṛṣis.

ṛṣirnāmnāṃ sahasrasya vedavyāsō mahāmuniḥ, chandōnuṣṭup tathā devō bhagavān devakīsutaḥ. (20)

The revelatory seer of these thousand holy names is the venerable sage Vedavyāsa; the poetic meter is Anuṣṭup; and the beloved presiding Deity of our hearts is the Supreme Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa, the darling son of Devakī.

amṛtāṃśūdbhavo bījaṃ śaktir devakinandanaḥ, trisāmā hṛdayaṃ tasya śāntyarthe viniyujyate. (21)

The seed-syllable is 'Amṛtāṃśūdbhava' (He who brought forth the nectar-bearing moon); the kinetic spiritual power is 'Devakīnandana'; 'Trisāmā' is the pulsating heart; and this recitation is chanted to awaken unbroken spiritual peace and love in our consciousness.

viṣṇuṃ jiṣṇuṃ mahāविष्णुं prabhaviṣṇuṃ maheśvaram, anekarūpa daityāntaṃ namāmi puruṣottamam. (22)

I prostrate with ecstatic love before Lord Hari—the all-pervading, the ever-victorious, the Great Supreme Lord, the omnipotent Creator, who manifests in manifold enchanting forms to vanquish darkness and defend His devotees as the Supreme Person.

Within His cosmic body all creatures live and rejoice. I bow to this wondrous Lord of the three worlds!

All-pervading like the open sky, tinted like a dark raincloud, endowed with graceful limbs, the beloved consort of Lakṣmī, with captivating lotus eyes, He dispels all fear of worldly transmigration and stands as the sole, loving Master of all creation.
